LESSON 06 ยท PROPHECY

Did Anyone Know About Jesus Before He Was Born?

What if someone wrote a letter describing you - where you would be born, what would happen to you, even how you would die - and they wrote it hundreds of years before you were born? That sounds impossible. But that is exactly what happened with Jesus.

Predictions That Came True

The Old Testament was written hundreds of years before Jesus was born. But it contains specific details about someone who would come to save the world. Here are some of the predictions and what actually happened:

  • 1
Born in Bethlehem. The prophet Micah wrote (700 years before Jesus): "But you, Bethlehem... out of you will come a ruler over Israel." And Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Not Jerusalem. Not Rome. A tiny, specific town.
  • 2
Betrayed for 30 pieces of silver. The prophet Zechariah wrote (500 years before Jesus): "They paid me thirty pieces of silver." And that is exactly what Judas was paid to betray Jesus. Not 20. Not 50. Exactly 30.
  • 3
Silent before his accusers. The prophet Isaiah wrote (700 years before Jesus): "He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth." And at his trial, Jesus stood silent. The Roman governor was amazed that he said nothing to defend himself.
  • 4
Buried in a rich man's tomb. Isaiah also wrote: "He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death." Jesus was executed like a criminal but was buried in the tomb of a rich man named Joseph.
๐ŸŒŸ Wonder of the Day

A mathematician named Peter Stoner figured out the odds of one person fulfilling just 8 of these predictions by accident. The answer? 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000. That is like covering the entire state of Texas two feet deep in coins, marking one coin, mixing them all up, and picking the marked coin on your first try while blindfolded. Jesus fulfilled not 8 but dozens of predictions.

The Big Idea

Here is why this matters: nobody can control where they are born. Nobody can control what their enemies will pay to betray them. Nobody can control whether soldiers will break their bones or cast dice for their clothes.

The prophecies that were fulfilled are exactly the kind that no human could fake or arrange. They are details that only God could know in advance.

And we know these predictions were written before Jesus, because ancient copies of them were found in caves near the Dead Sea in 1947. These "Dead Sea Scrolls" are over 2,000 years old - written long before Jesus was born.

๐ŸŽจ THINK ABOUT IT THIS WAY
Imagine someone wrote a letter 500 years ago that said: "A boy will be born in your town. He will have brown hair. His best friend will turn against him for exactly 12 dollars. He will not say a word when he is accused. He will be buried in the mayor's backyard." And then it all came true, every single detail. Would you think that was a lucky guess? Or would you think the person who wrote the letter knew something nobody else could know?

Questions Kids Ask

๐Ÿค” QUESTION

"Maybe Jesus just tried to make the predictions come true on purpose?"

๐Ÿ’ก GREAT QUESTION!

Some predictions, like riding a donkey into Jerusalem, could maybe be arranged. But you cannot choose where you are born. You cannot control what someone else pays to betray you. You cannot decide whether soldiers will break your bones or gamble for your clothes. The most amazing prophecies are exactly the ones no person could control. That is what makes them so powerful.

๐Ÿ“ Quick Check

Why are the Old Testament prophecies about Jesus so important?

๐Ÿ’ฌ Talk About It With Your Family
  • If someone predicted specific details about your life 500 years before you were born, what would you think?
  • Which prophecy do you find most amazing? Why?
  • What does fulfilled prophecy tell us about whether God has a plan?
